Egypt blog

After having an obsession with Cleopatra, I now have an urdge to go to Egypt. I've never been to Egypt, but I hope to one day.

I found this wonderful blog by an Italian photographer/travel blogger who loves Egypt and travels there often. She even happened to be in Egypt last year during the revolution. While she is not in Egypt now, some of her earlier posts are about Egypt. Check it out!

Cleopatra Through the Artist's Eye

Statue of a Ptolemaic Queen, with the cartouche of a Cleopatra PeriodPtolemaic Period (200–30 B.C.)
The cartouche reading "Cleopatra" on this statue's arm presents unusual features and is considered by some to be a modern addition. The statue does, however, represent a Ptolemaic queen holding a cornucopia. Attributes and dress point to a date in the second or first century B.C., and one recent study notes that details of the queen's hairstyle actually suggest an identification with Cleopatra VII.

Cleopatra Mines in Marsa Alam, Egypt

Photo: Travco Cleopatra Mines in Marsa Alam, Egypt
"One of the most interesting things to see in Marsa Alam is the location of the Cleopatra Mines. Also known as the ancient emerald mines or Mons Smaragdus (Emerald Mountains), this is one of the most famous and oldest mining complexes of the ancient world and is believed to have been used by the Pharaohs. Because the emerald is the oldest known gemstone, the deep green color is thought to be a symbol of eternity."

How Did The Ancient Egyptians Celebrate New Years?

The procession during the Feast of Opet

Ancient Egyptians actually celebrated their equivalent to New Years, the Feast of Opet, around the middle of June. During this time of year, the Nile River usually overflowed its banks. As a result, the people were not able to work but instead were able to take part in this multi-day celebration! The traditions of the Feast of Opet consisted of statues of the god Amon with his wife and son taken by boat in a procession down the Nile from the Mosque of Abu-el-Haggag in Karnak to Luxor. When the statues would arrive in Luxor, people would give offerings of food and drink and then start the singing, dancing and feasting for 24 days. The statues would then be returned back to the Mosque in Karnak.
