Cleopatra Through the Artist's Eye: William Wetmore Story

Cleopatra
1858
Marble
William Wetmore Story (1819–1895)
American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Neoclassical sculptors often drew upon mythology, ancient history, the Bible, and classical and contemporary literature for their subject matter. The statues of Harvard-educated William Wetmore Story exemplify this inclination, and Cleopatra, his most famous work, was only one of dozens of subjects such as Medea, Delilah, Electra, and Saul that were produced in his studio. "Cleopatra" is highly representative of Story's oeuvre: most of his statues are single figures in the round, often seated deep in thought meditating on deeds of cataclysmic significance; here Cleopatra contemplates her suicide. The sculptor was renowned for the archaeological exactitude of the props and costumes of his figures. The attention paid to historical accuracy is matched by the virtuosity of the carving.

Cleopatra's Culinary Adventures: Roasted Chickpeas with Nuts and Seeds

7 ounces cooked dried or drained canned chickpeas (garbanzos)

7 ounces mixed nuts (almonds, walnuts pine nuts, etc.) and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, etc.)

Juice of 2 lemons

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Put chickpeas with the nuts and seeds in a small pan. Add lemon juice and just enough water to cover them, plus a generous shake of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and simmer 5 to 6 minutes, then drain.

Spread mixture out on a flat ovenproof tray or dish and bake in preheated oven 20 to 25 minutes, shaking it every now and then to mix the peas, nuts and seeds around and checking to make sure that they do not burn.

Serve at once or store in an airtight container up to two weeks.

Rumors of Catherine Zeta Jones to be Cleopatra in a 3D rock musical

Photo: Mundocine
There was talk back in 2008 that Catherine Zeta Jones would star as Cleopatra in a 3D rock musical film of the legendary queens. In 2008 the film was rumored of getting a $30 million budget, Hugh Jackman to play her Roman lover Mark Antony, be directed by Steven Soderbergh and would feature a soundtrack by the punk band Guided by Voices. Now again, there was a mention of it in the Kansas Star Star, do you think it may still be made?

As athletic dancers create magic in and around the former corporate space, the audience will experience a dance performance unique to downtown.

Th show references everything from ancient Egypt to the 1980s TV show Dynasty. The narrative-driven work features 11 scenes, 13 dancers, a flautist and even an opera singer. The show works with the 1970s architectural interior by making it symbolize male executive wealth and power.

Cate Blanchett may star as Cleopatra in Sydney, AU

Photo: KeystoneUSA-ZUMA/Rex Features
Rumors are going around that Cate Blanchett may star as Cleopatra opposite Richard Roxburgh in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra opening in Sydney towards the end of next year, before launching a European tour. Sydney Theatre Company (STC) said British director Declan Donnellan had just conducted workshops with company actors last week. A spokesman said that Antony and Cleopatra was one project being considered. However, it has been speculated that the production could depend on Blanchette retiring from the company, where her three-year contract is up for renewal in November 2013, making Cleopatra Blanchett's STC swansong.

Madonna being Cleopatra at the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show. This was my first time at a Super Bowl party and I was luck to be in New York with New Yorkers when the Giants won (but it was a major plus that Cleopatra was there too)!
